April 6, 2001

April 6 seems to have a way of turning out to be special -- neat things just happen. I would imagine this is true for others of you as well. Perhaps you could share your April 6 experiences.

Mine happened late last night as I noticed that the "Open Directory Project" (dmoz.org), which is the most fruitful directory to get listed on, finally updated their site after over a month.

Anyway, the thing of most interest to me was that their new subdirectory: "LDS > Book of Mormon," was finally online. Several weeks ago, I was able to correspond with one of the volunteer editors at DMOZ about adding this long-overdue category, which he agreed to and said he added; but it has taken this long to finally get it online with the recent update.

I've been checking there nearly daily for all that time, each time wondering, "Sheesh, when are they going to update?" It used to be much more often that they would update their listings.

Anyway, with this new category online -- with nothing listed in it yet -- I submitted yet again an index I created quite a while ago, called "Book of Mormon Resources at Greater Things"

The following is a 'screen grab' of the
"Book of Mormon" Category at DMOZ.org April 6, 2001
-- no listings

"Book of Mormon" category at DMOZ.org -- zero entries on April 6, 2001

After submitting this, it dawned on me that (1) "today is April 6," and (2) "I created this index last year on April 6."

I thought that was pretty cool.

My "Happy Birthday" gift to the Savior, given by the Lord to me.

bullet Six Months Later

It is now September 9, 2001, and this evening the April 6 date came up in a special way again.  I was reading through the guestbook entries for the Greater Things Bible Codes section of the site, and saw that the second entry of three at the time was posted on April 6, 2001.

A few minutes later, for a separate reason, I was checking the greaterthings.com pages listed at the Open Directory Project (DMOZ) and saw that finally our Book of Mormon index is listed in the LDS > Book of Mormon category.  It is the only site listed so far.  It's taken this long for them to list anything there, and now the first and only site listed is from greaterthings.com.

The following is a 'screen grab' of the
"Book of Mormon" Category at DMOZ.org September 9, 2001
-- one listing : Greater Things . . .

After writing the above, I created the Isaiah -- Prophet of Prophets (Index of Studies).  As I was doing so I realized that this was an appropriate corollary index to this Book of Mormon - April 6 synchronicity celebration.

bullet October 31, 2001 [Halloween]

The synchronies and ironies just seem to keep on going.

Today (October 31, 2001 [Halloween]), I received notice from the Open Directory Project "Book of Mormon" category editor, Jacob Allred, that he had promoted our Book of Mormon Resources listing to a "cool sites" listing, while adding several other sites to the category that for two months listed just our index.

Subject: FYI: Your site chosen as an Open Directory Cool Site

This is to inform you that the website

has been designated a Cool Site in the Netscape Open Directory

Hi, I just started as an editor of the LDS Scriptures category at the DMOZ open directory project, and noticed that your site has been listed for a long time. It is definetely[sic] the best site in the Scriptures: Book of Mormon category, so I am marking it as "Cool". I wish you continued success on your website! -Jacob Allred

Besides the fact that this index is anything but mainstream and until now has been the only entry in the Book of Mormon category, what is ironic about this is the date: October 31 -- Halloween.  One of the projects I worked on today was updating the Halloween index here at GreaterThings.com  The Christian world understands better than the LDS world that Halloween is not a holiday we should be glorifying, especially not the goblins and demons, witches and gore.  Yet this evening, as I took my 23-month old son out to visit a few neighbor's homes, dressed in his cute puppy-dog costume my wife made him, the only time I had a fright was at the ward's Relief Society President's home, where they had an animated goblin hanging on their door that was motion activated, popping out at you as you approached the door.

Another irony of this date ties in to the address where we now live: 666 South.  We actually chose that address when given some options because the previous address was the same number as a neighbor two streets down.  Our reason was the opportunity it would give us to illustrate the fact that there is an opposite manifestation for every word and number.

What day does our Book of Mormon Resources index get awarded the "cool site" promotion -- the first page from GreaterThings.com of 56 listed there to receive this distinction ?  Halloween night.

At least one Mormon was doing something good on Halloween.

After sending out an announcement of the above development, Jacob responded with the following news:

I'm sorry, the guy in charge of me "uncooled" your site. He told me "There
are only 6 sites in this category so far. I imagine that an interested
person will look at all or most of them.". Sorry. :o(

Jacob

Darn.

But they did add yet another page from GreaterThings.com:

Need More BofM Subcategories at DMOZ

Subject: looking to the future -- subcategories LONG OVERDUE

Jacob (and DMOZ admin),

Now would be a good time (long overdue) to further subdivide the DMOZ > Book of Mormon category -- before you get a bunch of submissions that would then need to be moved (something that apparently DMOZ does not do very well -- probably some silly policy that some old hack refuses to change)

There are so many sites and subcategories relevant to the Book of Mormon. It is ridiculous to me that it has taken this long for there even to be a category for the Book of Mormon. I alone have some 10 sites to submit that could warrant separate listings.

I've signed up to be an editor before, but am repeatedly turned down (not mainstream enough? too strong of an agenda regarding my own sites?)

I would recommend some of the following sub categories:

   Book of Mormon
      - Testimonies
      - Apologetics
      - Prophecy
      - Commentaries
      - History
      - Archeology
      - Language Studies
      - Translations
      - Directories
      - Doctrine
      - Harmony with Bible
      - Humor
      - Opposing Views
         o Archeology
         o History
         o Doctrine

At present, the worlds largest directory is the most woefully inadequate when it comes to providing a service of directing people to quality material relevant to the Book of Mormon.

There ought to be ten editors on this subject alone.

Best wishes.

Go get 'em.

If you think they might reconsider my becoming an editor, I will resubmit an application.

I would love to help with this project.

Sincerely,

Sterling D. Allan
