II Nephi 26:20-33 *Parallel

v20 And the Gentiles are lifted up in the pride of their eyes,
and have stumbled, because of the greatness of their stumbling block,
that they have built up many churches;
nevertheless, they put down the power and miracles of God,
v29 He commandeth that there shall be no priestcrafts;

[See "stumble" Isa. 8:14,15 = 28:13,16 = Matt. 21:42-44 = JST-Matt. 21:51-56 = 2 Ne. 26:5c (= focal point of 2 Ne. 26:1-9 Chiasm).]

In script: [from D-1, D-2 in 26:13-20 chiasm] Behold, I prophesy unto you concerning the last days, when the Gentiles shall be lifted up in the pride of their eyes; yea, concerning the days when the Lord God shall bring these things forth unto the children of men; when they have stumbled, because of the greatness of their stumbling block--notwithstanding his commandment that there shall be no priestcrafts.

2 and preach up unto themselves
for, behold priestcrafts are that men preach and set themselves up
3
their own wisdom
and their own learning,
for a light unto the world,

[See 2 Ne. 28:26,31.]

[from B, C-1, C-2 in 26:13-20 chiasm]  They have built up many churches, even unto every nation, kindred, tongue, and people. Nevertheless, they put down the power and miracles of God: the workings of mighty miracles, signs, and wonders among the children of men according to their faith.  For, behold, priestcrafts are that men preach and set themselves up for a light unto the world, preferring their own wisdom and their own learning to the power of the Holy Ghost which maketh known all things.

that they may get gain

that they may get gain
and praise of the world;
but they seek not the welfare of Zion.

[from A in 26:13-20 chiasm] This they do that they might get gain and the praise of the world, seeking not the welfare of Zion.  They seek the praise of the world for themselves rather than glorifying Jesus Christ.

and grind upon the face of the poor.

v30 Behold, the Lord hath forbidden this thing; wherefore, the Lord God hath given a commandment that all men should have charity, which charity is love, and except they should have charity they were nothing.

[Also from A in 26:13-20 chiasm] While, Jesus Christ, the Eternal God, manifesteth himself unto all those who believe in him, inviting all; they, on the other hand, grind upon the face of the poor, contradicting the welfare of Zion. Behold, the Lord hath forbidden this thing; wherefore, the Lord God hath given a commandment that all men should have charity, which charity is love, and except they should have charity they were nothing.

v21 And there are many churches built up

Wherefore, if they should have charity
a-1 they would not suffer the laborer in Zion
a-2 to perish.
        b v31 But the laborer in Zion
        b shall labor for Zion;
a-1 for if they labor for money
a-2 they shall perish.

Wherefore, if they should have charity they would not suffer the laborer in Zion to perish.  And there are many worthy causes which ought to thrive but flounder for lack of sufficient resources.  But the laborer in Zion shall labor for Zion; for if they labor for money, they shall perish; and there are many churches built up after this manner, which shall perish.

which cause

envyings,
and strifes,
and malice.

v32 And again, the Lord God hath commanded
that men should not murder;
that they should not lie;
that they should not steal;
that they should not take the name of the Lord their God in vain;
that they should not envy;
that they should not have malice;
that they should not contend one with another;

And these churches cause that men should murder, lie, steal, take the name of the Lord their God in vain, envy, have malice, and contend with strifes one with another, all of which the Lord God hath forbidden.

v22 And there are also secret combinations, even as in times of old, according to the combinations of the devil, that they should not commit whoredoms;

[See Rev. 19:10; 1 Ne. 14:10-12.]

And there are also secret combinations, with which they commit whoredoms, even as in times of old, according to the combinations of the devil;

9

for he is the founder of all these things;
yea, the founder of murder, and works of darkness;
and that they should do none of these things;

[See Ether 8:18,19; Hel. 6:38-40; Ezk. 20:6,13,25,27.]

For he is the founder of all these things which the Lord God hath forbidden; yea, the founder of murder, and works of darkness;

10 yea, and he leadeth them by the neck with a flaxen cord, for whoso doeth them [See 2 Ne. 28:21-23.]
11

until he bindeth them with his strong cords forever.
shall perish.

[See 2 Ne. 10:16; 28:15,18; 1 Ne. 22:13; D&C 29:21; 133:72,73.]

And whoso doeth them doth the devil lead by the neck with a flaxen cord, until he bindeth them with his strong cords forever, and they perish.

12
v23 For behold, my beloved brethren, I say unto you that the Lord God worketh not in darkness. v33 For none of these iniquities come of the Lord;

For behold, my beloved brethren, I say unto you that none of these iniquities come of the Lord, for the Lord God worketh not in darkness.

13 v24 He doeth not anything for he doeth
14 save it be for the benefit that which is good
15 of the world; among the children of men;

He doeth not anything save it be for the benefit of the world, for he doeth that which is good among the children of men;

16

for he loveth the world, even that he layeth down his own life that he may draw all men unto him.

[See 3 Ne. 27:14; 20:26; 21:10; Rom. 11: 26,27,30-34 = Isa. 55:3,8,9; D&C 133:57,66,67.]

and he doeth nothing save it be plain unto the children of men;

[See "plain" Alma 5:43(43-46) = Hel. 7:29; 8:3,4,13-16 = 2 Ne. 25:4,7,20; 9:47 = Eth. 8:24.]

And he doeth nothing save it be plain unto the children of men; which plainness is found in the fact that he loveth the world, even that he layeth down his own life that he may draw all men unto him.

Wherefore, he commandeth none that they shall not partake of his salvation.
v25 Behold, doth he cry unto any, saying: Depart from me? Behold, I say unto you, Nay;
and he inviteth them all

Wherefore, he commandeth none that they shall not partake of his salvation, but he inviteth them all.

18 but he saith: Come unto me all ye ends of the earth, to come unto him [See Isa. 55:3.]
19

buy milk and honey, without money and without price.

[See Isa. 55:1,2 = 2 Ne. 9:50,51.]

and partake of his goodness;

Behold, doth he cry unto any, saying: Depart from me? Behold, I say unto you, Nay; but he saith: Come unto me all ye ends of the earth, buy milk and honey, without money and without price; and partake of my goodness.

20

v26 Behold, hath he commanded any that they should depart out of the synagogues, or out of the houses of worship? Behold, I say unto you, Nay. and he denieth none

Behold, hath he commanded any that they should depart out of the synagogues, or out of the houses of worship? Behold, I say unto you, Nay, he denieth none.

21
v27 Hath he commanded any that they should not partake of his salvation? Behold I say unto you, Nay; that come unto him,

Hath he commanded any that they should not come unto him and partake of his salvation? Behold I say unto you, Nay;

22

but he hath given it free for all men;
and he hath commanded his people that they should persuade all men to repentance.

black and white,
bond and free,
male and female;

But he hath given it free for all men, black and white, bond and free, male and female. And he hath commanded his people that they should persuade all men to repentance, black and white, bond and free, male and female.

23
v28 Behold, hath the Lord commanded any that they should not partake of his goodness? Behold I say unto you, Nay; and he remembereth the heathen;

Behold, hath the Lord commanded any that they should not partake of his goodness? Behold I say unto you, Nay; but he remembereth even the heathen;

24 but all men are privileged the one like unto the other, and all are alike unto God,
25 and none are forbidden. both Jew and Gentile.

Yea, all men are alike unto God, being privileged the one like unto the other, and none are forbidden, both Jew and Gentile.

Schopenhauer
All truth passes through three stages:
   First, it is ridiculed;
   Second, it is violently opposed; and
   Third, it is accepted as self-evident.
