Joseph Maudsley on Why He Left TLC

The following was received on April 18, 2001.  On Aug. 5, 2007, his mother informed us that Joseph Maudsley killed himself, and she requested that we remove this post.  I asked her why, had he changed his mind?  She responded "He didn't know what he thought anymore".

To the members of the TLC

by Joseph Maudsley (Randy's son)

When I called Dan Simmons and asked him to take my name off the records of the church he asked me to write him a letter, well Dan here is my letter. I have heard what has been said as to why I had left, That I gave in to the will of my father. The truth of the matter is that my dad had little to do with my decision. The decision was mine and I made it. It wasn't until I finally realized for myself that Jim Harmston was, and is not a man of God that I was able to leave. To believe that Jim is a Prophet and a man of God defies all reason. Since I have been here I can not think of one prophecy that Jim had made that has come true except of course that more people would leave the TLC. Why don't we look at his Isaiah prophesies, namely him and Angie. His son James or Emanual can already say Mamma and dada. Which are, by the way, the exact words that Jim used in his blessing to Angie. Reason only causes one to wonder then why did he marry Angie in the first place? Or what about Natalie and Dan's premature baby that Jim prophesied would go to full term. Or the church house that would be built up by Ruth Anderson's property.

Or November 25th of 97 when Christ was going to come and give us our C&Es made sure. Christ never came and Erica Malstrom was never healed. Of course it was the people's lack of faith and not Jim's lack of revelation. What about the Jewish holidays. Still nothing happened. Least we forget, March 25th & 26th when Christ was surely going to be there. After all, he did tell Jim that we were all worthy to meet him. Did he lie, or did Jim?

The three Nephites told him as well that we were worthy and were supposed to be giving him constant reports on what was happening in our lives. If so, why Jim's surprise on the 26th when he found out all the hard feelings held towards each other? What about Jim's ulcer that was really a heart attack.

You criticize the LDS church for changing the signs of the Endowment. Yet it perfectly ok for you to change the third sign back to the way the LDS church does it. If all men have to be saved on the same principles then why do you need special ordinances that "eye hath not seen nor ear heard"? If the ancients did not need them then why do you? There is a pattern in the scriptures that before a man meets God he is confronted by the devil who commands them to worship him. Unless of course you've closed the gates of hell and he can't appear to you. You say that Jim tests us through contradiction. Well, who brought contradiction in the world? Wasn't it the devil? We can put our faith in God because he is consistent and never changes. God is bound by his own word, yet Jim is not.

Christ said that by our fruits we shall be known. Look at Jim's fruits, what are they? How can such a man ever establish Zion, and how can a people controlled by fear? After all, the blind leadeth the blind into the ditch.

Good for you, Joseph. What a thrill to see humble souls punch through the egotistic smokescreen of self-appointed saviors. One has to wonder why the Holy Spirit would testify of TLC's legitimacy to anybody. So what is the attraction? a revulsive reaction to the sting of Mormon mistakes?
The more who think straight like Joseph, the more hope I have that there are still a few who want to serve the Lord with pure motive.
